HashMyFiles 1.88
Not what I expected, but one can work with it

(May 23, 2012)

From the title on this program -- Windows 64 bit HashMyFiles freeware -- I expected a 64-bit version of HashMyFiles, but what I got is a 32-bit version (according to Microsoft Process Explorer). I'm not sure if a 64-bit version would run much faster, but considering the run I just did took well over 24 hours to hash 426,955 files, even a few percentage faster would end up being several minutes faster.

I do really like this application and plan on using it to help find duplicate files, but I wish it was faster (e.g. threaded for multiple core / processor and multiple drive systems), as well as had some better file location options (such as its brother SearchMyFiles).

With over 850,000 files (3.8 TB) what I'd love to find is application that would -- in real time -- maintain hash & locate duplicate / identical files in a multiple drive system connected over multiple channels (in my case, I have 8 drives (Network, USB, and SATA).

As I say, I'm going to continue to use this application (until something faster comes along) and hopefully NirSoft will release a 64-bit multiple threaded version, in the future. If they do, I'm sure it will be a 5 star application!

(At least on my systems, IMHO, using multiple threads would allow this application to run faster, as it is CPU bounded and adding addition cores or processors would speed up this application. As a test, I ran four copies of HashMyFiles and instead of the CPU being only 12.5% busy, it was now 50% busy on an 8 core system. On a quad, I ran 3 copies of HashMyFiles and the CPU hit 75% instead of 25%.)

While writing a front-end program to simulate multiple cores processing multiple drives at the same with specific search criteria (e.g. time, size, etc) will increase performance and functionality, it is beyond end-user programming to change it from a 32-bit to a 64-bit application. I look forward to future improvements to HashMyFiles with baited breath!

A big thank you to NirSoft for writing and providing HashMyFiles 32bit and hopefully they'll release a 64-bit (or 64-bit multi-threaded) version soon.
